How Updating Your Locks Improves Security

In a recent blog post, we discussed what some of the benefits are to upgrading your locks. While we mention that keyless entries or updated locks adds convenience, saves time, and can be customized to match the style of your home, we realize that these are not the most important tasks that locks accomplish. Locks are meant to keep you and your home safe and protected. As we like to say, Always Safe and Always Protected is our goal for all of our customers. Let’s take a look at how updating your locks can improve your home security, and how ASAP can help.

More Control

Having control of who enters your home and when they have access to do so is a big perk of updating your locks, especially when you upgrade to keyless or remote entry options. Lending a set of keys to someone does not guarantee that you will get them back. In addition, while the key is in their possession, you cannot guarantee that they will not make copies of it. Switching out your locks can prevent anyone who has had a key in the past from accessing your home, and avoiding passing out keys to others once you have a new lock system in place can improve the level of security in your home. If you choose to go the keyless entry route, you can disable fobs or passcodes at any time, and can do so remotely, without needing to get any hardware back. On this same note, these passcodes and fobs can also be activated remotely, so you can allow someone access to your home while you are not there if needed.

Secure Software

There are many ways that software utilized by keyless locks improves your security. Depending on what system you decide on, your software may offer you the ability to keep a digital log of who has entered and exited your home, and you can even monitor this in real time, by setting up updates whenever your lock system has been engaged. As mentioned above, this software also often allows for remote control of who can access your home, by activating and deactivating codes and fobs. In addition, many keyless entry points are equipped with software that will lock out the entire system if someone attempts to tamper with it. This software also allows you to adjust passcode lengths and requirements, and set different access requirements or modes for different users.

When to Update Your Locks

In addition to the above ways that updating your locks increases your security, there are a few other scenarios in which having an updated lock system keeps you safe. If you have recently bought a new home, one of the first things you should do is switch out your locks. You can never be sure how many extra keys to your home are floating around out there, and you don’t want strangers having access to your home. For the same reason, if you are a landlord, it should be a regular practice to have the locks on your properties updated each time a tenant leaves. In addition, if your locks just aren’t working as well as they used to, if keys are getting stuck or it requires some extra elbow grease to get the lock to turn, it may be a good idea to update. If the scenario ever arises where you need to get into your home quickly, you will be glad that you did!

When looking for ways to increase your home security, don’t overlook one of the easiest ways to do so: updating or upgrading your lock system.
