7 Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Home Security Company in Las Vegas

Don’t Sign Anything Until You Ask These Questions

The home security industry has a mixed reputation — and for good reason. Aggressive door-to-door salespeople, hidden fees, multi-year contracts with painful cancellation penalties, and monitoring centers staffed by minimum-wage workers in another state.

That doesn’t describe every company. But it describes enough of them that you should go into any security consultation with your eyes open.

Here are the seven questions every Las Vegas homeowner should ask before signing a contract. (Spoiler: we at ASAP Security welcome every single one of these questions.)

Quick Summary
  • Ask about contract length and cancellation terms upfront
  • Verify that monitoring is done from a UL-listed center
  • Understand what happens to your equipment if you cancel
  • Find out how quickly technicians can respond to service calls
  • Check reviews — not just Google stars, but the content of the reviews

1. How long is the contract, and what are the cancellation terms?

Many national security companies require 3-year contracts and charge significant fees to cancel early. If you move, downsize, or simply aren’t happy with the service, you could be stuck paying for years.

Ask specifically:

  • What is the minimum contract term?
  • What is the early termination fee?
  • What happens to my equipment if I cancel?

Local companies typically offer shorter commitments and fairer terms. This is especially important for property managers who may need to adjust coverage as tenant situations change.

2. Where is your monitoring center located, and is it UL-listed?

UL (Underwriters Laboratories) certification for monitoring centers is the industry gold standard. It means the facility meets strict standards for backup power, staffing, and response procedures.

A monitoring center “in the US” could mean anything. Ask for the specific location and UL certification number.

3. What is your average alarm response time?

The value of monitored security depends entirely on how fast someone responds. Ask for documented average response times — not a marketing claim, but actual data.

Also ask: do you contact the homeowner first, or do you dispatch police immediately? In Las Vegas, false alarm fees from Clark County can be significant, so a company that verifies before dispatching can save you money.

4. Who owns the equipment?

Some companies retain ownership of the hardware they install. That means if you cancel, they can legally remove it — and you’re left with holes in your walls and no system.

Others sell you the equipment outright. Make sure you understand which model you’re agreeing to before any installation begins.

5. What happens if my internet or phone line goes down?

A system that only communicates over your home internet or landline can be defeated by a criminal who cuts the line — or simply by an outage.

Ask whether the system has cellular backup communication, and whether that’s included in your monitoring plan or an additional cost. Our residential security systems all include cellular backup as standard.

6. How quickly can you get a technician to my home if something needs service?

A national company may not have technicians in Las Vegas at all — they contract with local third parties or schedule service weeks out. A local company can typically get to you same-day or next-day.

Ask specifically: are your technicians employees or subcontractors? Are they background checked? This matters for both residential and commercial security clients.

7. Can I talk to recent customers?

References and reviews matter. But don’t just count stars — read what people say in the 3-star and 4-star reviews. That’s where you learn how a company handles problems, not just how good they are when everything goes right.

Ask the company directly if they can provide references from customers who’ve used them for 3+ years.
